What is Nylon and how does it compare to Polyester?

Both Nylon and Polyester are synthetic materials and both are used in the manufacture of backpacks and other goods. Nylon, however, is more durable, softer, stretchier, more water resistant, as well as wrinkle, mold, mildew and stain resistant. Nylon also has a higher strength to weight ratio than Polyester, which means it is stronger while still being lighter. Nylon is the perfect material for high-end backpacks, which is why we use it in ours.

What does "1000D" mean?

"D" refers to "Denier", which is a measure of cloth density. 1000D means that 10,000 meters of one strand of the fabric weighs 1000 grams. The higher the denier, the higher the strength of the fabric. In other words, 1000D Nylon material is appreciably stronger than 500D Nylon. However, equivalent D across different types of fabric doesn't lend itself to direct comparison. Because Nylon has a higher strength to weight ratio than Polyester, for example, 1000D Nylon is stronger and more durable than the equivalent D in Polyester. 1000D Nylon is used as the exterior material in our Expedition backpack.

Why not use 1050D ballistic Nylon in your backpack?

1000D Nylon is a one-ply-weave fabric that uses a texturized thread; whereas 1050D Nylon, also known as "ballistic" Nylon, is a two-ply-weave fabric that uses a filament thread. This gives  1000D Nylon its more natural look and feel; whereas 1050D ballistic has a shinier, more synthetic one.  This also gives 1000D Nylon slightly higher abrasion resistance while 1050D ballistic has a higher tear strength.  In real world situations, however, the tear strength and abrasion resistance of both fabrics is generally so much higher than necessary that customers will rarely if ever experience a difference. Combined with the much higher cost of 1050D ballistic, a backpack manufactured using 1000D Nylon is far more affordable while not sacrificing any utility.

Is your backpack waterproof?

The bottom 2 inches (5cm) of our 65L Expedition backpack is covered by a 0.5mm thick PVC material that is waterproof, allowing you to sit your backpack in wet grass or other less than ideal conditions. The exterior material of our backpack is 1000D Nylon. Although water resistant, Nylon material is not natively waterproof. You can feel free to spray your backpack with a waterproof coating, but be aware that no backpack will be completely "waterproof". So long as there are zippers, and stitching, there will always be ways for water to infiltrate. Best to avoid an immersion in the local lake or pond, and a good waterproof cover is still recommended.
